Six steps to finding the perfect fit

Step 1: Select your refrigerator type

Although the average size of a refrigerator varies depending on the type of fridge (bottom freezer, top freezer, French door or side-by-side), standard refrigerator dimensions range from 28 ¾ to 39 ¾ inches in width, 61 ¾ to 71 ¼ inches in height and 28 ¾ to 34 ⅝ inches in depth.

Learn more about the standard refrigerator sizes for the four types of fridges below.

Standard refrigerator sizes for bottom-freezer, top-freezer, French door and side-by-side fridges.

Bottom-Freezer

The average size of a bottom-freezer refrigerator is 29 ½ to 32 ¾ inches in width, 67 to 70 inches in height and 33 ⅜ inches in depth.

Top-Freezer

On average, a top-freezer fridge is 28 ¾ to 32 ¾ inches in width, 61 ¾ to 66 ¼ inches in height and 28 ¾ to 34 ½ inches in depth.

French Door

The standard size of a French door refrigerator is 29 ½ to 36 inches in width, 68 ½ to 70 ⅛ inches in height and 29 ⅜ to 34 ⅝ inches in depth.

Side-by-Side

The average size of a side-by-side fridge is 32 ¾ to 39 ¾ inches in width, 65 ⅞ to 71 ¼ inches in height and 29 ¾ to 31 ⅛ inches in depth.

While these are good benchmarks for the average refrigerator size in every type, you should still check your specific refrigerator’s dimensions online or in store.

Step 2: Measure refrigerator depth

Refrigerators come in two depths: they’re either virtually flush with your countertops or they extend past them.

To find the right refrigerator dimensions for a counter-depth fridge, measure from your wall to the edge of the counter.
To find the right refrigerator dimensions for a standard-depth fridge, measure from your wall to about six inches past your cabinets.
When measuring for refrigerator depth, ensure open fridge doors and drawers can fully clear kitchen islands and other obstacles.

Step 3: Measure refrigerator width

Measure from wall to counter, cabinet to cabinet or whatever may be on either side of your refrigerator space.

NOTE: If your refrigerator is located next to a wall, leave 2½ inches between the wall and the hinge side of the door so it can swing open.

Add a half inch on all sides of your refrigerator measurements for proper ventilation.

Step 5: Add a little breathing room

Now that you’ve got your refrigerator measurements, add a half inch on all sides for proper ventilation so it can cool things down without overheating.

Step 6: Map out a path

It fits your needs and fits your space, but how’s it getting there? From the nearest entrance to your kitchen, measure the width of every hallway and doorway to ensure your new fridge can make it through.
