Nugget ice is a soft, chewable type of ice that’s made by compressing thin layers of flaked ice into small, airy containers.

Coined by the New Yorker, “the good ice” refers to ice normally found in drive-thrus, restaurants and countertop ice makers. Nugget ice has the soft, perfectly chewable texture you crave and absorbs a little bit of the beverage it's in for a unique drinking experience. Whirlpool brand created the industry’s first refrigerator with an in-door nugget ice maker, so you can get the good ice at home without cluttering your countertop.

While both types of ice are easy to chew, there are a few differences between them. Crushed ice has a jagged, thin texture while nugget ice is soft and airy. Crushed ice may also melt faster than nugget ice and is generally ideal for slushes and water. Nugget ice, on the other hand, is ideal for soft drinks, iced coffee and blended drinks.

The unique structure of nugget ice is porous and contains tiny air pockets, which is unlike traditional solid ice cubes.

Nugget ice has a soft, chewable texture. Unlike traditional ice cubes, nugget ice is made of compressed bits, rather than a single frozen block, making it perfect to chow down on.
