Hood Type

Split screen drawing showing an undercabinet hood and a hood liner in a kitchen

Undercabinet hoods have a slim design that allows them to attach to the wall above the range or cooktop surface and below upper cabinets, and can vent externally or through recirculation. For a seamless look, range hood liners and their ductwork are fully hidden under and inside upper cabinetry.

Width

Line drawing of an undercabinet hood with a double-sided arrow showing the width

Undercabinet vent hoods are available in 24", 30" and 36" widths, with hood liners also available in a 48" width. Your range hood should be at least as wide as the range or cooktop surface below, and can be up to 6 inches wider than your range or built-in cooktop.

Dishwasher-Safe Grease Filters

Dishwasher-safe filter icon

Help trap unwanted grease and remove odors with a filter that unlatches from the hood and can be placed in the dishwasher for easy cleaning, so you can skip hands-on scrubbing.

Sones

Sound icon

Sones measure sound levels, similar to decibels. When comparing vent hoods, know that the lower the sones, the quieter the ventilation.

CFM Motor Class

Line drawing of steam lines rising from a pot on a stovetop into an undercabinet vent hood

Vent hoods provide cooktop ventilation that is measured by fan speed and the CFM motor class. CFM stands for cubic feet per minute, which measures how much air the hood is moving—the higher the CFM, the more powerful the ventilation.

Performance varies based on installation. Resources available at aham.org.

Gas Cooktop BTU Threshold

Flame icon

In order to handle the heat produced by a gas cooktop or range, the BTU threshold of a hood should match or exceed the total BTU output of the cooktop. BTUs, which only apply to gas cooktops, measure the power of each range or cooktop burner.

ENERGY STAR® Certified

ENERGY STAR® icon

ENERGY STAR® Certified models exceed government standards to help save money on your utility bills.

ADA Compliant

When the range hood is wired to operate from a dedicated standard electrical wall switch it meets the Standards for Accessible Design specified by the Americans with Disabilities Act to provide equal access to all. See install instructions for ADA compliance for more details.

Cooktop Lighting

Light bulb icon

Cooktop lighting is located underneath undercabinet hoods to illuminate the cooking surface below and can also act as a night-light. Lighting can have adjustable levels and comes in incandescent, halogen and LED.

Control Type

Line drawing of a hand pressing Tap Touch Controls on an undercabinet vent hood

The controls for an undercabinet hood let you operate and change the speed of the blower fan and operate the hood lights. Controls come in a variety of styles, including select models with electronic Tap Touch Controls, which are as easy to clean as they are to use.

Boost Function

Fan boost icon

Get an extra boost to quickly vent smoke and odors with maximum venting power for 10 minutes.

External Venting

Range hoods with external venting require ductwork to push air out of your home. Some hoods with external venting are also convertible and can be configured to recirculate air inside.
