Yellow folded weighted blanket

How to wash weighted blankets

If you’ve considered a weighted blanket to help you get a more restful sleep, but you’re not sure how to wash it, here’s some good news: washing a weighted blanket is not as intimidating as it seems. A weighted blanket can be washed by hand or in a commercial washing machine, and you can even take a weighted blanket to the dry cleaners if necessary. Follow along with this guide to learn how to wash your weighted blanket.

Can you wash a weighted blanket?

Yes! You can wash a weighted blanket in a large capacity commercial washer as long as it's made from glass, steel or plastic beads and the care tag says that it's machine washable. If the blanket is not machine washable, follow the care tag as directed to hand wash, spot clean or dry clean. It is strongly recommended that weighted blankets filled with natural fibers like sand, rice or beans only be dry cleaned.

Step 3: Pre-treat any stains

For any visible stains that the blanket or cover may have, use a stain remover to pre-treat them prior to putting it in the washing machine.

Step 4: Machine wash using a gentle cycle

If you’re washing a blanket in a commercial washer, be sure that it’s balanced evenly in the wash tub for the most efficient cleaning. Choose the gentle cycle and use cold water—hot water can damage the weighted blanket. Use a mild detergent and avoid any bleach-based cleansers or fabric softeners.

Step 5: Dry weighted blanket

Air drying your weighted blanket is strongly recommended. However, a dryer can be used on some types of blankets; first check the care instructions. If you choose to put the blanket in the dryer, always use a no heat or low heat setting and remove it promptly. If air drying, hang on a heavy duty drying rack and make sure that the weight is evenly distributed, or lay flat to dry.

How do you hand wash a weighted blanket?

If hand washing your weighted blanket, first pre-treat any stains. Fill your bathtub or a large container with lukewarm or cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Place the weighted blanket in the water and massage the beads for a few minutes. Replace the water as it dirties until it starts running clearer. Thoroughly wring out any excess water and hang or lay to dry.

Can you dry clean a weighted blanket?

Yes, some weighted blankets that have a filling made of natural material like sand, rice or beans should only be dry cleaned. The care instructions of your blanket should state if it requires dry cleaning.

How often should you wash a weighted blanket?

How often you wash your weighted blanket depends on how often you use it. If using it nightly, you may need to wash it every few weeks. However, frequently washing your blanket can compromise its durability, so it may be beneficial to purchase a protective or duvet cover to help prevent wear and tear.
