which model?

Match your square footage to the correct BTUs.

Step 1: Determine the square footage of your room.

  • For square and rectangular rooms, multiply the length by the width.
  • For triangular rooms, multiply the length by the width and divide by 2.
  • Oddly shaped rooms are a little trickier. You’ll have to break down the room into smaller rectangles and triangles and add their square footage together. See Fig. 1

Step 2: Use this chart to get a preliminary number of BTUs.

  • 251-300 sq.ft.

  • 9,000 BTUs
  • 401-450 sq.ft.

  • 451-550 sq.ft.
  • 12,000 BTUs

Step 3: Don’t stop there! Modify the BTUs based on your circumstances.

  • If the room is heavily shaded, reduce the BTUs by 10%.
  • If the room is very sunny, reduce the BTUs by 10%.
  • If it’s a kitchen, add 4,000 BTUs.
  • If more than 2 people regularly occupy the room, add 600 BTUs for each person beyond 2. (For example: 4 people = 2 additional, so add 1,200 BTUs.)

Step 4: Use your final BTU number to pinpoint the right Whirlpool room air conditioner.

If your BTU needs fall between model numbers, always choose the one with the higher BTUs to insure adequate cooling.
